(CNN) – Your brain might be slowing down a bit sooner than you think. A new study suggests some people's cognitive motor skills begins to slowly diminish after the age of 24.
Cognitive motor skills are a human's ability to process thoughts then react to them. This new study finds that reaction time might decrease, not at 60, 50 or even 40. Try in your 20s.
The study was put together by three Canadian researchers from Simon Fraser University. They found cognitive motor skills peaked at the age of 24, not after retirement.
In order to figure this out, the researchers gathered data from a group of more than 3,000 players of the fast-moving computer war game Starcraft 2, from ages 16 to 42, during game play.
The researchers looked at the gamers' performance data to determine how quickly they responded to different scenarios. The study revealed that players had decreased or slow-down in a measure of cognitive speed that is known to be important for performance begging around the age of 24.
But it's not all bad news for those of use over 24 years old. The same study also suggests that as some people's performance slows, they make up for it in other ways.
Instead of speed, they became more cunning and crafty, replacing speed with better strategy.
So, it looks like the study just may confirm the adage of older, but wiser.
