Weight loss surgery changes the way people taste and smell food - State Column

Of the respondents, 97 percent reported a change in appetite, 42 percent reported a change in smell, and 73 percent had a change in taste.

A new study, published in the journal Obesity Surgery, examines outcomes of bariatric surgery beyond weight loss.  The research team found that gastric bypass and the adjustable gastric band had health benefits beyond weight loss.  In an analysis of the study, Medical Xpress reports that they found changes in appetite, taste, and smell.

Of the respondents, 97 percent reported a change in appetite, 42 percent reported a change in smell, and 73 percent had a change in taste.  Common foods that were the subject of the change in taste included chicken, beef, pork, roast meat, lamb or sausages, white fish, fast foods, chocolate, greasy foods, pasta and rice.  Those with new food aversions reported greater weight loss as many of these foods can be responsible for weight gain in the first place.

According to Medline Plus, vertical gastric sleeve surgery, also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy is a surgery to help with weight loss.  In the procedure, a large portion of the stomach is removed, reducing it to the size of a banana.  By doing so, the patient is then limited in the amount of food that can be consumed before feeling full.

Similar to a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, Medline Plus describes a gastric bypass also as surgically reducing the size of the stomach.  However, the stomach is divided horizontally.  In addition, the new stomach is attached to a new part of the small intestine.  The new stomach is the size of a walnut.  Finally, Lap-Band surgery, also known as gastric binding, is described by Medline Plus as reducing the size of the stomach by placing a band around it.  The band is adjustable without having to perform another surgery.

Time Health & Family compared research on the three methods in 2011, based on two studies published in the Archives of Surgery.  They found that gastric bypass was the most successful and best tool for weight loss, reduction of symptoms of diabetes, and quality of life.  However, it is only so successful when performed at a high-volume surgical center by an experienced surgeon.
