Macklemore has issued a public apology for offending Jewish people with an outfit he wore in concert last Friday night.
During a stop in Seattle, the rapper performed "Thrift Shop" while donning phone facial hair and a long nose, a get-up that led many to believe he was mocking Jewish stereotypes.
The Grammy winner initially scoffed at such talk on Twitter - but took to his blog last night and wrote a lengthy explanation of what he intended to accomplish and how he understands why it was misinterpreted.
"I acknowledge how the costume could, within a context of stereotyping, be ascribed to a Jewish caricature," Macklemore wrote. "I am here to say that it was absolutely not my intention, and unfortunately at the time I did not foresee the costume to be viewed in such regard. I'm saddened that this story, or any of my choices, would lead to any form of negativity."
The artist added that he shooting for "Humpty Hump with a bowl cut," which really is a more likely explanation that he was trying to mock Jewish folks.
The apology's postscript includes a link to the Anti-Defamation League and the note concludes with:
"I truly apologize to anybody that I may have offended. I hope this better explains the situation and my point of view."
Safe to say we can all move on from this, right?
