Lara Spencer Promoted to Good Morning America Co-Host; Announcement Buried

Good Morning America's Lara Spencer has been named co-host of the ABC show, according to reports, along with Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos.

The lifestyles anchor's promotion was confirmed by ABC News chief James Goldston, who told the staff about the move in a memo Friday, April 18:

Amy Robach vs. Lara Spencer

"A key member of our on-air team, Lara Spencer, rejoined ABC three years ago, bringing her style, humor, sunny confidence, wonderful journalism, and storytelling to GMA."

"Lara is clearly an essential ingredient in the success we have enjoyed, and I am so pleased to announce that Lara has been elevated to co-host of the program along with Robin and George."

Goldston praised Roberts, whom he called "the captain" and "the heart of GMA," and veteran newsman Stephanopoulos, who has "a work ethic that's unmatched."

Lara Spencer, he says, will help round out the stellar news team.

"I remain in awe of the entire staff at GMA," Goldston shared.

"I could not be more excited and honored to work with this stellar team. Your dedication and passion are unmatched and I look forward to reaching great new heights alongside all of you."

Spencer's promotion is just the latest in a long line of changes at ABC's morning show, which also saw Michael Strahan join GMA as a part-time contributor.

Josh Elliott left the show for NBC Sports this spring, and in December, weatherman Sam Champion departed to take a position at the Weather Channel.

There's also a report that Elliott's replacement as news anchor, Amy Robach, reportedly called Lara Spencer a shameless flirt in a feud this month.

They know how to keep it interesting over on ABC!
