International Space Station commander Steve Swanson of Colorado sent a message back to earth expressing his crew's excitement about the start of the World Cup soccer tournament.
Swanson and astronauts Reid Wiseman and German Alexander Gerst will cheer on the U.S. and Germany from 230 miles above earth.
The crew sent good luck wishes to all the players and teams participating in the 32-team tournament in Brazil which begins Thursday and ends with the championship match July 13. "Have fun, play hard and we'll be watching from the International Space Station," Wiseman said.
The three astronauts have worked together for years to prepare for their time aboard the International Space Station.
But there is no doubt there will be some friendly competition between the two Americans and their German crewmate when the U.S. and Germany play each other June 26 at Arena Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil. See complete World Cup coverage here.
Swanson, who grew up in Steamboat Springs and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physics engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder, is on his third trip to the ISS.
